Ragamuffin Soul: Ragamuffin Soul »  What Song Does Your “C”hurch NEED To Sing?

  • Mike Stecker · 1 year ago
A song proclaiming Christ being the center of everything, our lives, our churches, our marriages, our jobs....

    "Center" by Charlie Hall
  • tymm · 1 year ago
my church needs to sing a song about aligning our hearts with the heart of God on the matter of orphans.

That or some Tupac or vintage Outkast.

    I'd take either...

I think a song about living out God's grace to the people around us is the right tune for us. Los, we are a new church plant and so want to exemplify the grace of God to our community. God is doing some awesome things!

Our church needs something about not being like the rich young ruler and being willing to sacrifice whatever is necessary to follow Christ.

Rich Young Ruler by Derek Webb?
  • Marcelo · 1 year ago
My church needs a song about the amazing privilege of being children of God.

But if I really had my way, we would sing "Yes, we can" Will.i.am style... at least until Jan 20. I can't stop singing it in my mind... :0)

a song recognizing that everything we have is a blessing from God and belongs to God... a song that offers that back to Him.
  • Jonn · 1 year ago
Our lives need to be screaming the melody of God's grace and reconciliation to people we come in contact with every day. We should be the example to the world on how to reconcile differences and share grace--we know the Source for both.

i think my church needs to sing a song about worshipping God in unity. there's some conflict between the young and old(er), especially when it comes to musical style. actually, it might be helpful to NOT sing a song for once and learn to worship in another way.

    Hey Carlos,
    Check this out:
Dave Hunt - Before the Throne of God Above
I'm not sure if it's an old hymn or if it just sounds like an old hymn. All I know is that the lyrics are truly amazing. Beautiful melody, too. The language might be too churchy for Sunday morning, but I don't know. Certainly worth hearing!

We should be singing about Jesus choosing poverty and sacrifice for us, and how our response should be a reflection of His example. Like Nic said, something counter to the rich young ruler's response (which is akin to the American experience). We proclaim that Christ has changed our lives, but we look no different from the outside looking in. Maybe a verse about how we fight to legislate morality, but forget to love sinners with the same passion. To be the hands and feet of Christ, not just the voice. Lalalalalalala...oh and throw a feel good verse in at the end so no one feels convicted...nah, on second thought, leave them at the cross.
  • BryanG · 1 year ago
That is an incredible song. But too churchy for Sunday morning? What a sad statement.
  • Mike T. · 1 year ago
I only meant b/c each church has its own worship style. It would be perfect (and is perfect) for Sunday morning at another type of church. The language of hymns is deep and rich, but also maybe not as accessible to those new to church. Not sure...

I'm an 18 year old college student who grew up in a contemporary environment and I dare say that the converted hymns (from purely piano+vocal to full band) are my favorite worship songs. I think they really capture the message of the Gospel better than most new songs today. (Not to hit on new songs - I do like them still). In regards to "Before the throne of God above", the theology in that song is incredible. Everytime I sing it I am called to remember almost every part of the Gospel! I love it. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that I think we may not give "deep and rich" material enter the church as much as we should because of our own preconceived notions regarding the spiritual status of the people around us.
  • Mike T. · 1 year ago
Good points - and I honestly don't know where I stand on the subject. I think it's a fascinating debate.
  • Jeff · 1 year ago
Is there a song out there that says "singing songs is not the definition of worship?" If so, we need to sing THAT song.

    Heart of Worship.
  • CoffeeWithChris · 1 year ago
Dude I think you meant little c church, right? As in local expression of the big C Church...

Anyway, I'd have to diverge from almost all the comments above and say that the song we need to sing isn't about us, it's about God.
  • Meg_Arias · 1 year ago
I'm 100% with CoffeeWithChris on this one...

me too. Can you imagine? Quit yo Bi+chin and get off yo lazy a$$ and
start singing and worshipping like you were created - sung to the
    melody of Mighty to Save

    A song of hope.

probably something along the lines of worshipping God how we are congregationally designed to worship God
  • CJ · 1 year ago
this is a song I wrote for my school (I'm a recent biola grad). It was written out of a response to our apathy and the need for us to be reminded that obedience leads to ridiculous, life-altering freedom. We debuted in chapel a few months ago and recorded it after. You can hear it here: http://homepage.mac.com/cj.casciotta/.Public/Pa...

If you ever need a co-writer I'm up for it, man. Just holla. (Did I just say holla? Too much Jay-Z in my diet.)

I need a song that lovingly, but pointedly says "get off your comfortable asses and do something!"

    remix that Blessed ASSurance homie---
  • james craig · 1 year ago
I think my church needs to sing under pressure. i like the queen and david bowie version myself but as long as they listen to the words then they can enjoy any cover they want to

    think about it......
  • B.CooP* · 1 year ago
    This post is nails Los---

Having just returned from HillSong i couldn't agree more with the heart of what you are saying---

Each Church location is on a journey... and it's people are together as they navigate the landscape ahead--- The Worship 'LEADERS' of those movements are infusing and reinforcing the masses with vision and affirmation on each step of the way--- Can't wait to hear how God manifests Himself in yall's song---

A lot less Tomlin and United. I can say that much. :P I think the song should be called. "Give Joyfully" or "Rich church? Us? Noooo!" :P

I'm thinking my church needs to be singing about how just speaking the NAME of Jesus can comfort and restore peace and joy. It seems that a lot of those attending are fretting BIG time over the economy. The tithing has dropped dramatically (which never made much sense to me, but to each his own) and people are so on edge and wanting to back out of volunteering and commitments they've made. I don't get it. How quickly we forget the power we've been given and the one who walks with us.

I sounded cheesy with all of that - but I think you get what I mean. We're so "stuck up" onourselves right now. Focus is TOTALLY in the wrong place.

So I started writing, too... but I'm my own worst critic, and I don't know that it'll be finised. But here's to hoping my our Worship leader will push me to, since I already told him it was in the works. *eek!*

I think our church needs to write a song that inspires balls to the wall excitement of how HUGE Christ is...that there is know boundary to who He is and all He can do...maybe in a call to worship format with TONS of percussion...I hear it almost like a chant that just explodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hmmmm I think I'm feeling inspired to write that right now...Thanks Carlos for the question...thanks God for the inspiration!

Everything by Tim Hughes kind of takes of in that direction...

Our church needs songs that challenge us to love one another.

When there's 60 years between us. Love
When you're sitting in my pew. Love
When you can't read my mind. Love
When your children dance with joy down the center aisle. Love
When I just don't get you. Love
When I fear I'm irrelevant and useless. Love

Yeah...a song like that. I think Jesus mentions something to this extent.

My church needs to be singing a song about full devotion to God. Not just a Sunday checklist, or "something to do". But something real, that they can get their heart's and head's around . . .

We wrote one called Let It Rise Up (Listen here: http://www.reverbnation.com/csfband) which conveys the idea, but a song that really challenges them to seek God on a daily basis, in a real way.

    ahh... sweet conviction
    i'm such a songwriting slacker

our church (www.rockofasheville.com) needs a couple of songs:
    one about confidence
and one about being blessed by a big God

we going thru a series in authentic christian community right now. i've been mildy dismayed at the lack of tunes that address the importance of living for God in the context of laying down our lives for one another.

One of the things I love about my church is that we DON'T sing songs that have a shelf life of less than 30 years. I don't mean that Tomlin, etc. songs can't be powerful, but there's a reason that the old hymns last 100+ years. The theology is solid, and the connection to Christians through the centuries and around the world means something.

That we sing the Gloria Patrie (Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, 'tis now and ever shall be, world without end, amen. Amen.) every single Sunday is incredibly centering. What else but what's in those words do we really need to focus on?
  • mrsDeb · 1 year ago
    Soul shaking gospel.

The kind that makes you think the song has ended, for just a few seconds and then starts back up again. The kind that evokes a smile and the ugly cry. The kind that reminds you how small the current moment is and how large eternity is. The kind that won't let you drop your hands or care about whether you're singing in key.
  • Brian · 1 year ago
we're singing one about drawing near to God and needing Him to draw near to us; relying on the Holy Spirit to work in us; and surrending ourselves completely to Him. That's the most current song revealed to us in MN.

we need a song on personal revival. my pastor stumbled across a song i wrote while looking through my file of music the other day - didn't know i wrote it. asked if i could lead it at the conference we had last week. i did because he asked. see i don't ever want to self promote anything i do. so in my mind it was a God thing that he chose it and asked for it. and now he wants it to be such a song.

i feel blessed and am scared outta my socks at the same time...secretly hoping maybe someday this could be a song that would catch on across the global church....but then again i am a dreamer.
