We're doing 2 new ones. The Cross by Kate Miner. Cool tune with some really cool lyrical ideas. We sort of built the service around it. We're also doing Happy Day by Tim Hughes for the first (maybe last) time. Which is a bit awkward for me. First time I heard the tune on Tim's podcast, I totally bagged on it to a bunch of other worship leaders. When I mentioned this week on my podcast that we were doing it, my buddy James about fell off his chair laughing saying "a few months ago you told me how crap that song was and now you're doing it?" What can I say? I'm a sell-out.

if it was at our church, half the people there would think they are all new anyway because they haven't been since last easter.

i'm doing one new song this weekend ('shout unto God', hillsongs united), and the rest will be ones we do periodically. 'shout unto God' is pretty simple--2 basic parts that build into each other, so i think people will pick up on it pretty well.

As long as its not more than a couple, I think it's fine. We're doing a couple new ones (Carried to the Table by Leeland, for our communion song, and Come Awake by Crowder, which is the theme for the whole Easter gathering this year) but a majority are solid staples that we can play with slightly to give them a new feel, but not change them too much so they're unfamiliar.

I am one of those crotchety congregation members who gets their chonies in a knot when asked to learn new songs...you know, my clap is off, I can't close my eyes because I am preoccupied with reading the screen so I can pick up the words, etc. But you decide. That is why you are paid the big bucks to be a worship pastor. ;) I'll deal. Personally, I like when you reinterpret old songs...I am a secret Maranatha lover. All those years growing up in a crazy, off the chain Penecostal church with people speaking in tongues and bein' slain in the Spirit--that was some worship, yo!

i wrote that before i read the last two comments. they are right, in general. let them really rejoice. sandals is different from all other congregations though, so do it. yeah!

ok off topic but hopefully helpful: www.pwarchive.com has a bunch of all the above songs, in chord charts. just thought i'd share. although i'm sure you already knew about it. but Just in case =)

i think it's a bit of a disservice to introduce new stuff on easter. worship can't evangelize if the congregation is stammering through new songs. i think you do stuff you know is 'home run.' in other words, stuff you've done at least 4 times, if not a 'staple.' here's our corporate worship stuff for Easter:

my savior lives - new life church
for all you've done - reuben morgan
in christ alone/the solid rock- stuart townend [travis cotrell arr.]
my hope is in the name of the lord - hillsong church

we introduced new life's "my savior lives" and reuben's new arrangement of "for all you've done" over the last couple of months so we could have some slammin' Easter stuff than redoing the tired stuff [My Redeemer Lives, All the Earth Will Sing Your Praises, Up From the Grave...wait, did I just say that?]

i like to do new music on holidays, but usually i introduce new songs 2 weeks in advance of the week that it is really meant for so the congregation can really sing it. we are doing tim hughes' happy day this easter...i introduced it 2 weeks ago.
